Letters received, 1913-1918.

The collection contains two letters, 1913 and 1914, to Charles S. Adams from G. Weidman Groff, representative of the Pennsylvania State College Mission to China, concerning Adams' plans, the conditions in China, and agricultural education in China, with a reprint of the "Opening of Agricultural Department" letter to the China Press (19 May 1914) from Joseph Bailie, University of Nanking Department of Agriculture, and a pamphlet, "The Colonization Association of the Republic of China." Also, includes a reprint from the National Review (Shanghai, China, May 1914), "The Basis of Society" about Bailie's work in agricultural education in China, and two copies of an endorsement by twenty-four Chinese of Bailie's work with the Famine Colonization Association which he founded. Adams also received a letter, 17 August 1918, from Charles T. Davies, federal food administrator for Berks County, Pa., about helping farmers.

George Weidman Groff received his bachelor's and master's degrees in horticulture from Penn State. He pioneered the idea of agricultural missions under Christian auspices and in 1907 became the first agricultural missionary to China. In 1921, he helped organize the Lingnan Agricultural College with a faculty of western-trained Chinese.
